Key Responsibilities
- Clean floors by sweeping, scrubbing, or vacuuming to maintain a clean and safe environment.
- Dry and wet mop, wash, scrub, and polish hard surface floors using handheld equipment, auto scrubbers, or automatic equipment for large open areas.
- Strip and finish hard surface floors manually or with power equipment when required.
- Transport garbage from drop points to garbage bins or compactors, ensuring proper waste disposal.
- Transport maintenance machinery between floors and job sites as needed.
- Clean and store equipment and machinery used during shifts.
- Clean glass areas requiring ladders, scaffolding, or other extension equipment to reach.
- Clean washroom floors including stripping and finishing as required.
- Clean stairwells and elevator cabs where ladders are required.
- Load and unload supplies and replenish cleaning solutions.
- Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
- Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors as needed.
- Steam clean or shampoo carpets to maintain a fresh and clean appearance.
- Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
- Mix water and detergents in containers to prepare cleaning solutions according to specifications.
- Remove snow and debris from sidewalks, driveways, or parking areas using snowplows, snow blowers, or snow shovels, or spread snow melting chemicals as required.
Qualifications
Experience in performing various cleaning, housekeeping, and maintenance activities in an institutionalized environment is required. Experience in using floor maintenance machines, cleaning equipment, materials, and solutions is essential. Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the provisions that apply to this work including WHMIS is required. The ability to lift, push, and pull heavy items as well as climb ladders is necessary. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, clients, and the general public are essential. Ability and willingness to work weekends, holidays, and shifts as assigned, as well as work in multiple locations, is required. The ability to follow verbal and written instructions, prepare and maintain manual and electronic records is essential. A valid Class G license may be required. Must meet security clearance requirements where applicable.
