Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka is seeking a dedicated Maintenance Helper to join our Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) team. In this hands-on position, you will assist higher-grade mechanics in maintaining our fitness, sports, and recreation facilities, ensuring they are safe and in optimal condition for service members and their families. This role is open to U.S. Citizens, Nationals, Military Spouses, and other eligible applicants who possess current SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement) sponsorship in the Kanto region. Company Overview
This position is with the U.S. Navy’s Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC), specifically within the Fleet Readiness directorate at Fleet Activities Yokosuka. Our mission is to support the operational readiness and quality of life for sailors and their families stationed in Japan. The Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) branch supports essential Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) services, including fitness and sports facilities. Key Responsibilities
Working under direct supervision, you will provide essential support for facility and equipment upkeep. Your duties will include:
- Assisting maintenance workers in performing general repairs and alterations across fitness facilities, including work on doors, floors, walls, windows, and light fixtures.
- Helping with simple plumbing repairs such as clearing clogged drains, replacing faucet washers, and repairing toilet mechanisms.
- Assisting with minor electrical tasks like replacing light bulbs, fuses, and fixtures.
- Performing light maintenance on air conditioning units and assisting with the upkeep of fitness and recreation equipment.
- Driving government vehicles to transport tools, materials, and waste to and from work sites.
- Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work area and adhering to all environmental, safety, and security regulations.
- Assisting with the general upkeep of outdoor athletic fields and facilities as required.
Qualifications
This position has specific eligibility and skill requirements. Applicants must:
- Be eligible under the “Who May Apply” criteria: U.S. Citizens, Nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the U.S., with current SOFA Sponsorship in the Kanto region. This includes Military Spouses, Family of overseas employees, and current CNIC employees.
- Have the ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision, demonstrating basic knowledge of common trade practices (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, electrical).
- Be familiar with the safe use of common hand and power tools.
- Possess or be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
- Be able to obtain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and Navy Basic Fitness certifications within 90 days of hire.
- Be physically able to lift up to 40+ pounds, and perform tasks requiring prolonged standing, stooping, bending, and climbing.
- Reside within the commuting area of Yokosuka, Japan.
