Key Responsibilities
- Perform welding, brazing, cutting, and fabrication work on various metal structures including the ship hull, piping systems, pumps, winches, motors, shafts, weirs, and metal superstructures.
- Use various gas and electrical welding equipment to work with materials such as steel, aluminum, and other metals, ensuring all repairs meet structural integrity standards.
- Read and interpret simple plans, schematics, and blueprints to execute precise fabrication and repair work according to specifications.
- Utilize measurement tools including squares, levels, tapes, and electronic gauges to ensure accuracy in all welding and fabrication tasks.
- Carry out designated security duties as part of the deck crew, contributing to the overall safety and operational readiness of the vessel.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring all welding equipment is properly stored and maintained for safety and longevity.
- Collaborate with the deck team and communicate effectively with the ship captain regarding the status of repairs and any potential safety concerns.
Qualifications
A valid Ordinary Seaman Merchant Mariner Credential issued by the United States Coast Guard is mandatory for this position. Candidates must also hold a current US Coast Guard medical certificate and a Transportation Worker Identification Credential. A strong background in welding with demonstrated experience using various gas and electrical equipment on materials including steel and aluminum is essential. The ability to read plans and blueprints and use precision measurement tools is required. Candidates must be physically capable of performing the duties of the role including standing for long periods, climbing, balancing, and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds. Security awareness training is also required as part of the deck crew responsibilities.
