Key Responsibilities
- Perform clinical laboratory tests across multiple disciplines including hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, serology, microbiology, and blood bank.
- Calculate test results accurately and measure prescribed quantities of samples during testing procedures.
- Notice and document pertinent details of specimens under microscopic study, applying keen attention to detail.
- Conduct a wide variety of laboratory tests either manually or using automated instrumentation, following established procedures.
- Evaluate information against measurable criteria in the performance of all laboratory tests.
- Perform precise and accurate testing according to established laboratory protocols every time.
- Receive written requisitions from health care providers for routine and special laboratory tests and prioritize accordingly.
- Set up and adjust laboratory equipment and apparatus to ensure proper functioning.
- Obtain laboratory specimens directly from patients by venipuncture when required.
- Add reagents or indicator solutions and subject specimens to various laboratory operations according to established procedures.
- Prepare slides for microscopic analysis as necessary for accurate diagnosis.
- Observe test reactions, changes of color, or formation of precipitates; study or subject treated specimens to automatic analyzing equipment for qualitative and quantitative analysis.
- Record test results accurately to flat logs and request slips, and file reports in CHCS-AHLTA.
- Prepare specimens for transport to MTF laboratory or for mail-out to reference laboratories.
- Prepare biological waste for proper disposal following infection control guidelines.
- Participate in and perform prescribed Quality Control (QC) and College of American Pathology (CAP) programs.
- Comply with The Joint Commission standards, applicable laws, regulations, and MTF medical staff bylaws.
- Provide training and direction as applicable to supporting government employees, including hospital corpsmen and students.
- Operate and manipulate automated systems such as CHCS, AHLTA, ADS, Essentris, and Clinical Information System (CIS).
- Participate in clinical staff Performance Improvement (PI) and Risk Management (RM) functions as prescribed by the Commander.
- Comply fully with HIPAA privacy and security policies, obtaining and maintaining a National Provider Identifier (NPI) as required.
- Maintain documentation of all treatment provided in accordance with clinic directives, preparing legible records and reports using only approved abbreviations.
- Adhere to Department of the Navy, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, and local instructions and notices throughout the contract term.
- Practice aseptic techniques and comply with infection control guidelines, including proper handling, storage, and disposal of infectious wastes and universal precautions.
Position Requirements
- Function with an awareness and consistent application of safety procedures in all laboratory activities.
- Apply an awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care, striving to manage situations in a reduced-risk manner.
- Exercise awareness and sensitivity to patient and significant others’ rights as identified within the MTF.
- Delegate tasks and duties appropriately in the direction and coordination of health care team members, patient care, and clinic activities.
- Comply with all applicable Federal, State, and local laws, Department of Defense, Department of Navy, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, and MTF instructions and policies.
- Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this position, you must meet the following criteria:
- Possess and maintain current certification and registration as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (MLT-ASCP) OR by the American Medical Technologists (MLT-AMT).
- Be in good standing with no sanction or suspension by the Federal Government.
- Possess and maintain current certification in either the American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers or American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course.
- Be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language fluently, maintaining good communication skills with patients and other health care personnel.
- Ability to pass all background and suitability checks required for government employment.
- Hold a valid driver’s license and be able to travel locally as needed.
- U.S. Citizenship is required for this overseas government support position.
